History of the Provost Guard
The Provost Guard Unit was organized in 1950 by Potentate R.G. Kinkle who appointed Roger Kennon, Captain. The new unit was authorized a total roster of sixteen that included a Captain and fifteen other members. Up until this time the unit had functioned as Al Chymias Law and Order Unit.
In 1957 Potentate J.A. Connor reorganized the unit. Again, Roger Kennon was appointed Captain. Unit strength was increased to twenty one which included a Captain and twenty Nobles.
In 1976, Potentate Harris Cole, authorized unit strength increased to one Captain, one 1st. Lieutenant, three 2nd Lieutenants and 36 Nobles.
Since 1976, the following men have served as Captain: Paul Fey, 1976; A.B. Williams, 1977; Jerry Archer, 1978; Joe Holmes , 1979; M.J.Slater, 1980; Tom Brimhall, 1981; Carl Davis,1982;Paul Brimhall, 1983; E.C.Jones, Jr., 1984; W.D.Moore, 1985; George Selph, Jr., 1986; Ernest Crook,1987;William A. Miller, 1988; Rus Towery, 1989; Larry Speck, 1990; Jim Norman, 1991; Robert Carter, 1992; Harry Gilcrease, 1993;Bobby Campbell, 1994; Eugene Scudder, 1995; Richard Jones 1996; Charles Moore, 1997; Don Brown, 1998; Eugene Scudder/Don Smith, 1999; George Powell, 2000; Robert Carter, 2001; Randall Crews, 2002; William Embrey, 2003; Bill Norton, 2004; Robert Embrey, 2005; Paul Thompson, 2006; Ted Islley, 2007 and Earl Wright, 2008.
Members of the Provost Guard have always purchased their uniforms. Uniforms have changed some over the years. Today’s uniform is a red blazer, black trousers, black tie, white shirt black socks and black shoes. This formal uniform is worn for official duties and as requested by the Potentate.
The Provost Guard has been outstanding in competition, winning first place several times at S.E.S.A. and Imperial. When there is a job to be done at Al Chymia Shrine, you can always count on the Provost Guard.
The Provost Guard has always served the Potentate and the Shrine in order to afford security and protection at any event as requested. Guard members will continue to fulfill this duty.
